Aquabatics Intro to Creeking Course and Cataract Creek
These past two weekends I have been fortunate enough to run a couple of Introduction to Creeking weekends for the Aquabatics Kayak School. These are new to our list of courses this year and have been super popular (16 people over 2 courses), and the feedback has been excellent. We are super stoked and look forward to our final creeking course for the season later in June. Below are some images from the second course plus a couple of Cataract Creek images from a personal trip late last week.

CREEKING COURSE(S) - AQUABATICS 2008
This course is basically designed for strong Class III boaters looking to step their boating up a notch into the world of 'creeking', this often overused term has been thrown around a lot of late and due to it's rising popularity has seen a large increase in people paddling stuff that maybe a little out of their league. This program focuses on boat control in creekboats (as opposed to playboats), on river communications (verbal and non-verbal), safety, scouting, leadership and rescue along with key creeking skills such as the boof, eddy hopping (boat scouting), throw bagging, basic mechanical advantage systems and more.......basically a good base for the skills required to enjoy this paddling discipline safely.
DAY 1: KANANASKIS RIVER The first evening is spent on the Class II+ Kananaskis River, working on boat handling, river running tactics, posture and most importantly boofing.
DAY 2: HIGHWOOD RIVER The Kananaskis session leads onto a medium volume run on the Green Ford to Ings Creek section of the Highwood River. The first half of the day sees us really drill in on paddling techniques, river leadership, safety and rescue, the second half offers up some excellent Class III+/IV rapids which require the group to implement their newly learnt scouting, safety and leadership. Check out the photos below for some images from the Highwood.

DAY 3: ETHERINGTON CREEK After a day of controlling creekboats in medium volume water, day 3 sees us head to the ultra low volume Etherington Creek. This is a short, steep run which gives the crew a feel for some non pushy steeper creekboating, including the 15 - 20 foor Mindbender waterfall. Clients put all the skills learned over the past few days into practise on this run, which is a super cool experience. Essentially by the end of this course we aim to have people thinking about making wise decisions, setting up appropriate safety and having a good feel for selecting lines on Class III/IV runs. Check out some images of the team on Etherington below.

For more information on these courses check out www.aquabatics.com or contact Simon at courses@aquabatics.com.

May 2008 - High Water Creeking Week
Another update from the world of Adventure Trippin, our staff and friends. The Aquabatics (www.aquabatics.com) kayak school season is now in full swing, with courses running at a great rate. This week in prperation for our upcoming Intro to Creeking course a few of us headed out to scout some runs (that we use for the course) that had recently seen near record water levels (thanks to 10 days of pouring rain). We were greeted on the first day with some incredible boating on Etherington and Sullivan creeks plus a fun high water run on the Highwood River.
Yesterday (Thursday) we went out to check out th local classic Cataract Creek, which was reading 6 (ish) on the gauge. It would appear the gauge isn't calibrated as at the put in we estimated a flow of perhaps 9-10 cms of actual water flow. This supplied plenty of juice for the run, with most of the main rapids being borderline runnable. Though the line on Hercules and Titan were certainly good to go.
I will let the pictures and captions below do the rest of the talking.....

Pincher Creek Kayak Festival - Lundbreck Falls
Hi All
A quick update from the crew here at Adventure Trippin. This past Victoria Day long weekend Mitch, Blair, Nikki and I were down at the Pincher Creek kayak festival representing Aquabatics and running trips for some of the festival participants. We were blessed with incredibly good weather, a great turn out, awesome food and great organisation from Chuck Lee and the Pinch-o-Creek Creekers kayak club. One of the joys of this festival is the close proximity of the classic park and huck Lundbreck Falls. Below are a few pics courtesy of Nikki Winters.
Enjoy

Mt Ngaruhoe Night Climb and Wairoa River Rafting
After the end of the NZ Mutli Sort trip with team 'Wild Hogs', I had 10 days to kill before the St Peters College kayak program. So Nikki flew out from Canada on the whirlwind North island trip.
So far we have rafted, surfed (a lot), chilled (a bit) and climbed Mt Ngaruhoe for sunrise (a 1:30am start). A few days of surfing to go before Nikki heads home and I run the kaayak program for a few weeks.
Here are some pics from the past week or so......

Epic Canadian Winter
I haven't posted here fro a while, my apologies on that front. Unfortunately the video and still cameras haven't been out much.
This is just a quick report on the absolutely insane few weeks we have had snow wise. Castle mountain in southern Alberta has been incredible, one day in particular felt like a days heli skiing, 50 + cms overnight on top of a 1 + metre five day snowfall was unbelievable.
Fernie has been in the same snow belt, just getting dumped on day after day. So if you are a skiier or rider and your area hasn't been getting much snow I would suggest checking it out.
I am off on a two week ski road trip next weekend and will be for sure getting the video camera out, so stay tuned for some images and footage.

Kenya First Descents and ol' Favorites
After a super successful commercial climb and bike ride of Mt Kenya I found myself wih 4 days to kill and a couple of solid paddling partners keen to get stuck into some first descents in central Kenya. So a rapid (excuse the pun) mission was born. James Savage, Mark Basso and myself headed out to run some favorite creeks in the area along with discovering some new classics.
Our four day assault saw us add an extra 5 or 6 top class slides to the already awesome Ragati river, a repeat run on the classic Maragua River, an epic adventure run on the Rubangazi, a sweet scout of the lower Maragua gorge, some time on the lower Tana and more.
Prior to the trip Mark and I also completed the first and sceond descent of a long unrun rapid, previously known as 'cricket' now known as Canadian Club on the Mathioya River.
I am now in the process of compiling an online river guide to central and western Kenya, this will have pictures, brief river descriptions and the all important logistics, expect to see this in the next couple of months. For now I will leave you with some cool pictures from our few days boating in Africa.

Kicking Horse, Babine/Skeena and Bugaboo Creek
Well, it's been a while since my last post, but this month has been hectic, though in a most awesome way. I have racked up over 5,000 kms of driving in the last 3 weeks, running trips and courses in Likely, BC (Caribou and Quesnel Rivers), Golden (Kicking Horse River) and the jewel in the crown the 160 km, raft supported, 4 day wilderness run on the Babine and Skeena Rivers near Smithers BC. This is in my top 3 intermediate wilderness multi days in the world. Keep an eye out on adventuretrippin.com as this will be our newest commercial rafting trip for 2008, 5 days of great whitewater, epic scenery, some of the worlds best freshwater fishing and a high likelihood of Grizzly sightings. I have a tonne of pictures to sift through, so there will be more to come, but as a taster here is a quick slideshow of Matt, Mitch and myself running a drop on Bugaboo Creek, near Brisco British Columbia.

Skookumchuck Creek - July 2007
It has been a busy summer here in Canada, between running the kayak school, booking trips to Kenya and Australia and designing/researching our new Tibet adventure there hasn't been a lot of time for getting into BC and boating. We did however manage a Medium/low water run on the always enjoyable Skookumchuck Creek near Canal Flats. This run at medium flows is a super fun, remote section of continuous Class III/IV. As the river gets higher the grade certainly jumps up a notch or two. here are some pictures.

Summer Solstice on the Sheep
June 21st, 2007, the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. What better way to spend it than an evening out paddling. Got a bit of a crew together for a blast down the Sheep River. We put on the river kind of late, had a pretty big group so let's just say we utilized nearly all the minutes of sunlight. Here's a few pictures.......

Sheep River Revisited, May 26th 2007
Matt has arrived in Canada from New Zealand ready for a summer of paddling and working, so we headed out on Saturday for a run down the Sheep River. Surprisingly it had dropped since last week, though still plenty of fun even at lowish water levels. Here are some pictures courtesy of Nikki Winters.

Sheep River, May 20th, 2007
Yesterday (Sunday May 20th) Junior Development Kayak Team member Sam Coutu and myslef met at the Sheep River near Turner Valley Alberta for a quick morning run before picking up Matt Burton at the airport. We were greeted with sunny skies and a water level a little on the low side but still very runnable. This was Sam's first trip down the sheep, and sporting the Zero Gravity 54 he paddled most of what the Sheep has to offer, and I was stoked to get on Tiger Jaws and Triple Falls for the first time this season. With a well above average snowpack this year the Northern and Central Alberta runs are shaping up for a good long season, and many of the Interior BC runs are already getting pretty high for this time of year. Looks like a pretty epic season ahead of us. Watch this space for more pics and stories
