Tryst Lake Touring - Kananaskis Country Feb, 2007
After a month of solid work in Africa and British Columbia, it was time to hit up some backcountry riding. So with (what we thought) no significant snowfall, and low expectations Josh, Tim and myself headed into 'K' country for some earned turns.
Upon arriving at the Tryst Lake 'car park' we saw 6 or 7 cars, so now we figured, no new snow, plus 6 car loads of people, not necessarily a recipe for a great day of touring. But, we decided to head out anyway, as it was snowing lightly and temperatures were mild and any turns would be nice.
On our way up to the lake, (moderate skinning for about 1 hour or so) we noticed that the snow was awfully dry and deep considering the tiny accumulations we'd had over the past 4 weeks.
So it was much to our delight when we topped out on the ridge above Tryst Lake, that we realised this fresh snow was filling the chutes we had come to ski/ride. After the obligatory telemark vs splitboarder vs alpine touring 'chatter' we proceeded to drop into an untracked chute and rode it all the way to the lake, one more lap on another untracked chute and we headed across the valley and rode a line non of us had done before which was the highlight of the day. 20 odd cms of snow on a slightly crusty base through some beautifully spaced trees.
On top of the great skiing/riding we scoped out some epic looking Spring time descents in the surrounding area. Here's a few pictures courtesy of Josh Oullet.
