Early Season Kayaking - Toby Creek, April 19th
After our run down Skookumchuk we decided to hit up Toby Creek. Upon arrival we were greeted with reasonably warm weather, and a low but very paddleable flow. Those of you who paddle Toby know the rivers character really doesn't change alot from low to medium so all the rapids were super fun and clean, you could run more or less everything without hitting rocks. We had one incident just after the Smittys portage (which looked even more manky than usual at this flow, no real options for running it), where one of our group got there boat VERY stuck and it required an hour or so of heaving, z-dragging and cursing to get it off. Other than that it was an awesome run, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the water level. Check out the pics below for some cool images, as this canyon is bloody beautiful at this time of year, probably one of the better early season paddling options in this area.

Early Season Kayaking - Skookumchuk Creek, April 18th
After an epic season of skiing and boarding (which is still kicking here in Canada) we finally dusted off the kayaks and went out to see what we could find. James is here in canada from Kenya so we figured a 3 degree day in April was an ideal introduction to cold water paddling. Skook has always provided some water early season so we decided to hit this up first. So James, Chris Goble ad myself loaded up the 2 x 2 Mazda truck and headed for the put in. About 16 kms into the 20km shuttle we came across a road block in the form of a long deep section of snow with a recently fallen tree. No problems, we have a Kenyan and an Australian ready to charge throught he deep snow and kind of just drive over the tree. So 45 minutes and 12 or so high speed attacks later, we made it, only to be stopped another kilometre up the road by impassable snow. So we figured we had come his far so we got changed and slid/hiked/snowboated to the put in.
As would be expected the water was fairly low and James' brand new Wavesport Habitat 80 now looks three seasons old, but the canyon sections were fun, and it was surprisingly warm for a 3 or 4 degree day.
The mighty two wheel drive all terrain Mazda, temporarily held up. James on his way to the put in Nice to be paddling again. There is quite alot of new wood in the river, though at this water level it wasn't really a problem. though as everything starts to melt be wary of some decent river wide trees along the way. The trees weren't anywhere to dicey from what I remember but we had to do some limbo moves to get by many of them. also the road to the put in (short shuttle), will likely need another 4 or 5 days of reasonable weather to be driveable all the way even in a 4 x 4.
